Quilt & Town Criers Jacket

The Moree Quilters Group was approached by the then Town Crier to create a Town Criers outfit for the Australian Town Criers Championships which was being held in Moree in 2012. The concept behind the design was to create a jacket that resembles a Driza-Bone.

Patterns for the coat were made first and then had the goanna's screen printed on to represent the local Aboriginal totem to tie the community together. Other Moree Plains elements represented on the jacket are our agricultural industry, the wetlands and nature, as well as the artesian water being represented by the bore head on the back.

In total the project took the group the best part of 12 months to create. It was presented at the Australian Town Criers Championships in 2012 to all the Town Criers, where it received a standing ovation and 'Ringing of the Bells'. This masterpiece was also awarded 'Best Town Criers Outfit of Australia' for 3 years in a row following that.

Members who contributed to the Town Criers Jacket include: Sue Aber, Helen Burling, Peggy Carter, Bridget Casey, Jan Davies, Jean Gall, Lynne Harding, Bev King, Dorothy McMillian, Marie Michell, Helen Mitchell, Di Shepard, Also a special thank you to Dorothy Sherratt & Elizabeth Von Gavel for helping the group with this project.
